Introduces the ways in which things and animals move, shows how humans have used the same principles, and provides instructions for a number of simple experiments

Grade 3-5-- These series entries include good quality, full-color photographs and drawings as well as simple experiments. Action is a basic introduction to the principles of movement, organized into two-page sections that deal with trajectory, gliding, jumping, etc. The text is clear and succinct, and the illustrations are helpful for clarification. A good experiment book to enhance this title is Philip Watson's Super Motion (Lothrop, 1983). Structure is an attractively designed overview of the shapes and forms found in nature and in human technology. It explores such diverse topics as cells, crystals, skeletons, tubes, and armor. The information provided is not extensive enough for reports, but it may encourage curious children to pursue further exploration in greater detail. Several titles in the ``Eyewitness'' series (Knopf) would make good follow-up reading for more ambitious science buffs.

Splendid color photos coupled with a simple, precise text make this and Taylor's other three titles in the new ``Flying Start Science'' series (Structure; Water; Light) engrossing and exciting introductions to both physical science and the natural world. Here, a stop-action photo of an apple falling from a tree gives instant insight into the laws of motion and the meaning of acceleration; it could even lead to the kind of curiosity and surmise that inspired Newton's laws. The author's dog, leaning toward the inside of the curve she is bounding around, is simultaneously a vivid illustration of centrifugal force, a friendly, familiar sight, and a handsome picture. Simple experiments allow hands-on verification of the principles discussed. Moving back and forth between pictures of plants, insects, or animals and discussions of forces, actions, and reactions transforms science from word or curriculum to the real world around us.
