This unique guide focuses on villages that are restored, re-created, or reconstructed, and which depict a complete historical environment in relationship to the natural setting. The museum villages described are organized into geographic regions: New England; the Middle Atlantic, South, and Southeast; and the Midwest. Utopian communities; Shaker villages; Lincoln's New Salem, Illinois; Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia; and Mystic Seaport, Connecticut are among the 43 villages included. Each entry gives facts about the village, nearby accommodations and places to eat, and a basic history of the site and people. Maps and photographs accompany each entry. Unfortunately, the guide barely crosses the Mississippi into Iowa and omits villages in the West and Southwest. A companion volume would be valuable. Olga B.
