Abstract Reviews the book, Beginnings in relational communication by Kenneth L. Villard and Leland J. Whipple (1976). In this book, the authors assume that most students who enroll in speech-communications courses want to know how to get along with others, less to learn about them as individuals or to sway them and more to establish and maintain personal relationships as a consummatory activity. For this purpose, a concept of "relational communication" is identified and its implications for everyday life are explored. 275 pages.
