This edition of the Institute of Petroleum Electrical Code assumes that area classification has been carried out in accordance with the Institute's Area Classification Code for Petroleum Installations (Part 15) and describes the recommended equipment selection, installation and maintenance practices to be adopted to avoid the risk of fire or explosion from the use of electricity, or from lightning, static electricity or power induced by radio frequency radiation within hazardous areas in the oil industry. It takes cognizance of the greatly increased development of national and international standards, covering the design and construction of apparatus and systems for use in hazardous areas, and of codes of practice covering apparatus selection and installation.
