-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays an important neurotransmitter role within the mammalian brain; it is one of the most important inhibitory mediators within higher centers. The recognition of a second functional receptor, GABAB, has sparked a research interest in GABA that has increased steadily since 1981. This work provides the background for further research in the GABAB field. Based on the First International GABAB Symposium held in Cambridge at King's College in September 1989, this work offers discussion of GABAB receptors and transmitter release, peripheral and biochemical aspects of GABAB, and electrophysiological aspects such as synaptic responses in the hippocampus and GABAB-mediated inhibition of calcium currents. Contributions also cover applied aspects, including GABAB receptors in epilepsy, GABAB binding sites in depression and antidepressant drug action.
