The accurate interpretation of infrared spectra of organic structures is an extremely important tool for the analytical chemist. Using up-to-date source material, this volume presents a compilation of the infrared absorption regions of ninety of the most important organic molecular fragments. This highly practical guide introduces the reader to a straightforward technique for determining all the fundamental vibrations of a molecular fragment. The set of normal vibrations and the infrared absorption regions of ninety molecular fragments are then discussed and tabulated. The discussion of each fragment is accompanied by a large number of references. A Guide to the Complete Interpretation of Infrared Spectra of Organic Structures offers the analytical chemist the possibility of a more profound interpretation of infrared spectra. In addition, it assumes only a basic knowledge of infrared spectra, and so will prove very useful for non-specialists who use infrared spectroscopy in analysis.

From the Publisher:

A complete guide to the infrared absorption spectra of 90 molecular fragments derived from the vibrational analysis of organic compounds. The means by which these spectra are obtained is demonstrated by three examples. Discusses the set of normal vibrations and infrared absorption regions of each fragment, followed by tables showing the absorption regions of each of the fragments in particular surroundings.

Review:

A detailed documentation of group frequencies based on the structural unit concept is provided by Roeges. -- Applied Spectroscopy Reviews 31, 179, 1996

After the classical and still frequently used books of Bellamy this book offers a new approach to the assignment and interpretation of vibrations of organic molecules. The book offers a valuable tool for the interpretation of spectral data, and is highly recommended -- Recueil: Journal of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society 114, 114 ,1995

The aim of the book is to allow the reader to make a nearly complete association of all bands observed in the infrared spectra (4000-200 cm-1) of organic compounds with some constituent group in the molecule. The final result would then be an assignment of all observed bands to a crude approximation of the normal modes of the molecule. -- Applied Spectroscopy 49, 12A, 1995

The book is essentially addressed to organic chemists who routinely use IR spectroscopy for molecular structural diagnosis. Its message is that such spectra can be analysed to give information about many more molecular vibrations than those few whose absorption bands are used for functional-group evaluations. A systemic procedure is described for enumerating the normal modes of vibration and for approximately assessing their natures -- Spectrochimica Acta 51A, 1450, 1995

The book sets out to look at essentially familiar material from different standpoint. Instead of emphasizing the relationship between specific absorption bands and functional groups, it examines all the vibrational modes belonging to a molecular fragment. The complete vibrational spectrum of the molecule can then, in principle, be synthesized by summing the contributions of each fragment. The value of such an approach is that more accurate and detailed structural information can be deduced from a fuller interpretation of the spectrum -- Journal of Molecular Structure 350, 91, 1995

This book seeks to bridge the gap between a full, normal coordinate analysis of a molecule and a preliminary analysis usually restricted to the spectral region above 1500 cm-1. The book discusses the 3N-6 absorption frequencies of the more important functional groups in different molecular environments. -- Education in Chemistry 32, 83, 1995

This is a serious attempt to move from characteristic vibrations in small groups as treated in texts such as those of Bellamy and Grasselli, to larger units. These hopefully would encompass additional bands which would help in structure analysis. It will be interesting to see if time showes the merit of using this extended group approach -- Spectroscopy Europe 7, 39, 1995

This is a very practical guide designed as a tool for analytical organic chemists involved in the interpretation of infrared spectra. The concept of group vibrations which cause absorption bands in characteristic spectral regions has been extensively applied to this purpose. A tentative assignment of all fundamental vibrations can be achieved from the fundamental vibrations of molecular fragments and their couplings -- Vibrational Spectroscopy 10, 77, 1995

What the book does provide is a guide to the frequencies of characteristic infrared bands for common functional groups, in a treatment which is rigorously based on the number of bands to be expected according to normal coordinate analysis. The book explains the way in which these characteristic frequencies vary with structure for a rather large number of simple functional groups and for a very few ring systems. An enormous amount of work has gone into compiling all this data,, and it has been done carefully. The work is certainly up-to-date -- Journal of the American Chemical Society 118, 3543, 1996
