Synopsis

Dynamic Analysis of Weather and Climate Atmospheric Circulation, Perturbations, Climatic Evolution Marcel Leroux This is an up-to-date textbook on meteorology and climatology with a fresh, unconventional view of the workings of the climate system, in which the author poses serious questions about the validity of certain aspects of current global warming theory. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I the author discusses general circulation in the troposphere. He argues that such circulation is driven by thermal deficit at the poles, causing Moving Polar Highs (MPHs), which have the principal role of feeding cold air towards the tropics. This in turn causes warm air to move up towards the poles. The relief and distribution of land masses, and the Earth’s rotation, control the trajectories of the MPHs, and the formation of Anticyclonic Agglutinations (AAs). The latter determine the properties of tropical circulation, the trade winds, and tropical monsoons. These discussions lead, in Part II, to a consideration of the dynamics of the weather through the study of perturbations, including precipitation, the role of MPHs in polar and temperate regions and at tropical margins, pulsations in the trade winds and monsoons, the concept of the meteorological Equator, and tropical cyclones. Part III reviews the causes of climatic variations, including solar activity, variations relating to the Earth’s orbit and axial inclination, volcanic eruptions and the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. The book concludes with a discussion of Palaeoclimatic variations and recent climatic evolution, including the Sahelian drought, changes in polar and alpine glaciers, and the El Nino/Southern Oscillation. Readership: Undergraduate and postgraduate students in meteorology, climatology, palaeoclimatology, geography, environmental science, atmospheric physics and environmental physics. Lecturers and research scientists in these subjects, and those concerned with regional and global climatic change. Engineers and professionals in many fields such as agriculture, forestry, ecology, and the management of land, water and other natural resources.

From the Back Cover

The English language second edition of Dynamic Analysis of Weather and Climate is based on the updated French second edition text and illustrations of La Dynamique du Temps et du Climat (2000). The text is expanded through the incorporation of some material from Marcel Leroux’s Global Warming: Myth Or Reality (2005) together with new material covering recent events, including the UK inundations 2007, the German inundations 2008, illustrations and bibliographical important updates – such as IPCC AR4 2007 and references up to 2008. This second edition will therefore be the most up to date, complete synthesis of the late author’s research and understanding of weather and climate, as explained to a graduate student or engineer school level audience. The organization of the book makes it clear and logical to follow. New illustrations and satellite images provide the reader with a better understanding of the concepts. The new material demonstrates the relevance of the author’s research in relation with new reports and meteorological events which now appear to be the best validation of the late author’s thesis.

About the Author

Marcel Leroux is Professor in the subject areas of Climatic Change and Palaeoclimatology at the Université Jean Moulin in Lyon, France, and Director of the Laboratoire de Géographie Physique, CNRS. His state doctorate in climatology was published in 1983 in two volumes entitled The Climate of Tropical Africa, with sponsorship of CNRS, French Ministry of Cooperation and Development, and World Meteorological Organisation. He has founded and set up two climate research centres, one in Africa and the other in Lyon, France. The author of 100 papers in international refereed journals, he is a member of the American Geophysical Union, American Meteorological Society, and International Programme of Geological Correlation (Palaeoclimatology).
