Sails of the Herring Fleet traces esteemed director and theorist Herbert Blau's encounters with the work of Samuel Beckett. Blau directed Beckett's plays when they were still virtually unknown, and for more than four decades has remained one of the leading interpreters of his work. In addition to now-classic essays, the collection includes early program notes and two remarkable interviews -- one from Blau's experience directing Waiting for Godot at San Quentin prison, and one from his last visit with Beckett, just before the playwright's death.

Herbert Blau is Byron W. and Alice L. Lockwood Professor of the Humanities, University of Washington.

About the Author:
Herbert Blau is the Byron and Alice Lockwood Professor in the Humanities at the University of Washington.
From Library Journal:
Blau (English and modern studies, Univ. of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; Nothing in Itself) is no stranger to the theater: he cofounded the Actor's Workshop of San Francisco and codirects the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center in New York. This collection of essays traces four decades of his work with Samuel Beckett, both as a director and a theoretician. The early essays are particularly interesting, for Blau directed Beckett's plays when they were practically unknown, including the now legendary production of Waiting for Godot that was given in San Quentin Prison. His elegy for Beckett is printed here, and readers of Roland Barthes will be interested in the essay on Beckett and Barthes, "The Punctum, the Pensum, and the Dream of Love." Recommended for university libraries and libraries with theater collections.DSusan L. Peters, Emory Univ. Lib., Atlanta Brine, Adrian & Michael York.
