Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A Versatile Community The History of the Settlers of Central Moutere by George McMurtry. SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Very good hardback with jacket. Minor compression to edges, small tear on top of spine. Pages very good with no owner inscriptions. Jacket has a little creasing at edge, fading to spine with a small tear. SCARCE. 458 pages with illustrations. The history of the settlers of Central Moutere Successive Maori tribes traversed the Moutere and used the area for seasonal food gathering. They found the wet, heavily bushed valley floors unattractive for permanent settlement. The the east, above the flats, the scrub covered hills were equally inhospitable. The area was sub-divided into 50 acre 'suburban' lots. Nobody wanted them. Some years passed before Governor Grey's cheap land policy became effective . At that time the way was opened for settlers with limited means to take up one or two sections. English, German and Scots, this new class of small farmers came from stubborn stock. This is their story. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-1741829852510
