The clockmakers were the first real "Connecticut Yankees," all-around mechanics capable of constructing any small or medium sized metal product for which a demand might arise - surveyor's and mariner's instruments, scales, bells, buttons, tools, silverware, and in one instance at least, a fire engine. All were capable of making a complete clock from forging and casting the part to fitting and assembling the complete mechanism. It is appropriate that the early clocks are now among the collector's most prized possessions. This book closely examines the early clockmakers from EbenezerParmele, the first Connecticut clockmaker (1712) to Eli Terry and the rise of the factory system.
