Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) studied law and was admitted to the bar but never practiced. Instead, he devoted his time to writing and is best known for his novels The Woman in White, No Name, Armadale, and The Moonstone, which has been called the finest detective story ever written. A number of his works were collaborations with his close friend, Charles Dickens. The Woman in White so gripped the imagination of the world that Wilkie Collins had his own tombstone inscribed: "Author of The Woman in White."
Bernard Mayes is a teacher, administrator, corporate executive, broadcaster, actor, dramatist, and former international commentator on US culture. He is best known for his readings of historical classics.
"A neglected gem: one of Collins's most enticing fictions, and one of Hesperus Press's happiest rediscoveries." —Kirkus Reviews

Unabridged Dover (1985) republication of the first book edition, published by Richard Bentley and Son, London, 1879. Author introduction. First published in 1860. Clean and unmarked wraps with lady in carriage being greeted by the rogue kissing her hand. Whisper of wear to corners. Wilkie Collins, 1824-1889, is considered to have been the first English author of bona fide detective and mystery novels. "A Rogue's Life" is a first-rate Victorian tale, an autobiography of an unrelenting, unrepentant rascal, a fun, rollicking, five-part novelette -- love at first sight, unconventional wills, peculiar Scottish marriage laws. It is gay and bantering and quite unlike his other novels. 609 pages. 5.25 x 8.5 inches. 1985, Dover Pubns, New York, New York, USA. Seller Inventory # 024345
