The scion of a musical family, French organist and composer Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) began his career early, with a professional appointment as a church organist at the age of 12. His compositions are characterized by a highly individual style, as this distinctive compilation attests. Assembled by noted organ scholar and performer Rollin Smith, its contents include Three Preludes and Fugues, Op. 7; Scherzo, Op. 16; and Les vêpres du Commun des Fêtes de la Sainte Vierge, Op. 18. The Preludes and Fugues — Dupré's most popular pieces — were previously available only in an expensive European edition, making this modestly priced volume a boon to students and professionals alike.
