Synopsis

Most people are so much bound to the land as their environment that they seldom realize what a large part of our planet consist of water. In fact, water covers more than two thirds of the globe. This sheer immensity has helped the world's oceans to keep many of their secrets from human curiosity.

Nonetheless, people began to explore the seas long before recorded history, and the great spurt of scientific interest and activity that started only 100 years ago has made remarkable progress. This book examines the mysterious seas from many angles. There are chapters explaining what is known about ocean size, waves and current, tides, and marine life. Other chapters describe the latest advances in fishing, oil and gas exploitation, and power generation from the oceans. Finally there is a look into the future to see how ocean resources could be developed further, and what is international problems might arise from such development.
