Synopsis

The Motherland is a searing saga of two American families, with unforgettable, unique characters; Evelyn, the audacious, sassy, beautiful daughter of warm-hearted, simple, funny, loving people, who doesn't want to have their kind of life. She runs away from her native Pittsburgh and her boring first husband, and with young daughter in tow, lands Sonny Sterne, a brilliant, sensitive investment banker, who, with his ambitious brother turns Wall Street on its ear. An amazing portrait of ambition and passion, by turns comic and touching. And in Evelyn an unlikely heroine, darkly self-involved,but strangely irresistible.

From the Author

This, my eighth novel, originally published in 1974, depicts a time I thought was vanished, until, at the urging of a fellow author, I re-read it and saw how timely it was. Resonance of political corruption that echoes what we are going through today, and as steamy a sexual relationship as was ever put to paper without scalding the page.

About the Author

Gwen Davis is the author of seventeen published novels, among them 'The Pretenders'and 'Silk Lady', both international bestsellers. She wrote travel for the Wall Street Journal Europe, which also gave rise to her writing about food and wine, using all the same skills as writing about sex, and a lot of the same adjectives. At the urging of her hunky, funny husband, Don, who said "Get in there and give them one for the healthy heterosexual," she wrote a scorching bestseller. The Motherland remains among her best novels, and offers the promise of redemption, not just for her character, the daughter of her heroine, and the people who read it, but for her career. She has just moved back to Southern California, about which Thomas Mann noted that "every writer needs an island of boredom." But the weather is also nicer, and so are most of the people. She is currently engaged in writing another bestseller, because it's time, and her grandsons are too little to read the hot parts. She is a widow and still pretty cute.
