Dr. Steve Tipps earned his doctorate at Ohio State University in early and middle childhood education and has been on the faculty of the University of Virginia, Midwestern State University, the University of North Texas, and the University of South Carolina Upstate. He is currently working as a mathematics consultant for elementary schools in North and South Carolina.
Dr. Art Johnson has had a wide range of experience in mathematics education. He taught middle and high school mathematics for over thirty years before moving to Boston University. While at Boston University, Dr. Johnson taught undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education. He is presently a professor of mathematics for Metropolitan College at Boston University. Dr. Johnson has written over forty books and twenty-five journal articles that span many topics in mathematics education, from mathematics history and geometry to manipulatives and English language learners.
"This book is user friendly for the preservice teacher when it begins each topic with what the teacher needs to know. Whether the pre-service teacher is strong in math or not, he/she benefits from a brush-up that helps situation him/her at the appropriate level if understanding is needed." "This book can be both a textbook and resource book. That is a bonus!" "When my students frequently referred to lesson ideas from the textbook and when they decided not to sell their textbook at the end of the course, I [knew] I picked a winning text."
"I think the activities are wonderful. The activities sections seem very different from the methods texts I have been using. They are truly inviting."
"I think the authors have done a great job with topic selection. I especially like that they introduce a topic in one chapter and then extend the topic in the next chapter. That is good for the students and especially good for the teacher in terms of flexibility and time management in the course."
"Activities are rich in mathematical content, formats, contextual information, and representation formats, which offer wonderful teaching ideas for pre-service teachers. Each of the activities is accompanied with objects (and other components) and the objective is stated in terms of students' terminal observable behavior indicators..." "The most appealing part of this book is its approach to explaining how to teach mathematics to pre-service teachers, and its well-balanced focus on both conceptual and procedural aspects of teaching and learning mathematics."
