Carole Rich is a retired journalism professor, formerly at the University of Alaska Anchorage, where she was the Atwood professor before accepting a full-time position. She also served as chair of the journalism department at Hofstra University in New York for two years, taught journalism at the University of Kansas for 11 years, and worked for 16 years in the newspaper industry. She was a reporter for the former PHILADELPHIA EVENING BULLETIN, city editor of the SUN-SENTINEL in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and deputy metropolitan editor of the HARTFORD COURANT in Connecticut. In addition to serving as a visiting writing coach at newspapers throughout the United States, Professor Rich has conducted many writing seminars for journalism organizations, including a group of professional journalists in Spain. She is the author of multiple highly regarded media and reporting textbooks.
"I think that this text offers a very realistic and comprehensive overview of the fundamentals for future communicators."
"I usually get really great feedback from students on the textbook - as they seem to find it easy to follow and very helpful. One student, in fact, was so excited about the textbook that she asked to make an announcement in class about its ability to help her better understand the various story structures."
"It covers the range of media writing that the course is intended to cover, but it also breaks down content into specific story types (example: disaster stories), which many media writing books don't do."
"Carole Rich's Writing and Reporting News presents a clear and current overview of journalism and communication. The text provides students who have little or no experience in the field with a comprehensive introduction, while raising some of the leading issues in the field."
