Synopsis

How we respond to photographs is influenced by various factors. David Campany, in this captivating exploration of photography, demonstrates that our thought process about images is as significant as their content. He presents 120 images, ranging from familiar to unexpected, spanning fine art, film stills, documentaries, fashion, and ads. Campany's commentary accompanies each image, guiding readers to interpret and understand the image independently. In a culture where we often overlook visuals, Campany encourages us to truly see.

From Library Journal

This work documents and celebrates contemporary dance in a collection of stunning, sometimes graphic, images and a quintet of essays by dance critic Nancy Dalva on some of today's most important choreographers, i.e., Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Merce Cunningham, Trisha Brown, and Paul Taylor. The photographers include Annie Leibovitz, Chris Callis, Joanne Savio, and Andrew Eccles. Dance Ink was an avant-garde, award-winning quarterly published from 1990 to 1996, but this is not a simple "best-of" rehash. Many of the startling photographs are from the pages of the magazine, but others are new and previously unpublished, and all are newly laid-out in an attempt to encompass all the current trends in American dance. This bold, in-your-face visual record of modern movement will best serve dance, performing arts, and photography collections.?Carolyn M. Mulac, Chicago P.L.
