Over 70 photographs, many by Penrose’s wife Lee Miller, illustrate the colourful cast of characters, including Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot, Jean Cocteau and Georges Braque, as well as artworks and events described.

Elizabeth Cowling was co-curator of the blockbuster exhibition Matisse Picasso (Tate Modern, Grand Palais, Museum of Modern Art). Her publications include Picasso: Sculptor/Painter with John Golding and Picasso: Style and Meaning.
