BioDesign is an inspiring resource for designers, architects, engineers, and students. Featuring 73 projects at the intersection of biology and design, it surveys artworks, prototypes and architectural concepts that harness living materials and processes, presenting bio-integrated approaches to achieving sustainability, new innovations enabled by biotechnology, and provocative experiments that deliberately illustrate the dangers and opportunities of manipulating life for human ends. Ranging from fabrics and "concrete" made with bacteria to arbor-architecture, these projects are now more pertinent than ever. By examining how this new phenomenon fits into the history of architecture, art, and industrial design, William Myers contextualizes the shift toward biodesign through comparisons to previous historic transitions in art and design practices, clarifying its implications for the future.

"The biggest innovations of the twenty-first century will be the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning." -Steve Jobs
"William Myers has collected an impressive variety and number of case studies that involve organisms at all scales, from plants and animals to bacteria and cells, to be used as architectural, graphic, or interior elements...If our relationship with nature is broken, this book makes us hope that perhaps we will be able to fix it from within." -Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture and Design, MoMA

hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Spuren von Feuchtigkeit / Nässe; Leichte Rillen / Abschürfungen / Risse / Knicke. Designers and artists have always looked to nature for inspiration and materials, but only recently have they been able to alter and incorporate living organisms in their work. 'Bio Design' examines some seventy projects (concepts, prototypes and completed designs) that cover the fields of architecture, industrial processes, education, fine art, material engineering and bioengineering. Each project is illustrated by a short text, images and captions that combine to explain the problems the venture tackles, and how living materials and processes were harnessed to solve them in sustainable and aesthetically pleasing ways.
