Wide-angle, close up photographs of people, famous and obscure, from throughout the world, from the French Academy to the Guardian Angels to sumo wrestlers

Close up is right! Klein put a wide-angle lens on his camera, headed for any crowd he could find, and got as close as he could. He decided not to worry about graininess, blurriness, depth of field, and other technical considerations but to go for a spontaneous feel. He got it. These double-page, black-and-white photos are overflowing with people--blurry, grainy, and out of focus but vibrant, busy, and emotional. His compositions are never chaotic, though. Alternation of large and small forms, off-kilter camera angles, and surprising points of focus are combined to create dramatic visual impact. Highly recommended for all photography collections.

Seller: Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Condition: As new. Some copies may have very light shelf wear to the dust jacket edges/corners. Otherwise they are in excellent condition. Spanning several decades, this collection of William Klein's work serves as a vivid reminder of his radical questioning of the prevailing photographic myths of objectivity and non-intervention. Eighty double-page photographs--all taken up close with a wide-angle lens--include images of Muhammad Ali winning in Zaire, President Mitterand in Paris, the Pope at Lourdes, Jesse Jackson in Atlanta, and many others. In his revealing and provocative text, Klein writes about himself, the subjects, and his photographs. Seller Inventory # ABE-1707326587714

hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
