Chapman’s approach to race cars is a bit different than the many others on your shelves—he offers up a step-by-step guide to driving them. Well, all right, not exactly, but he addresses readers as “you” and puts them in the driver’s seat. The format for each double-page topic is busy yet supplies logical information accompanied by color photographs and diagrams. After four sets of rules, he deviates from instructions to describe actual national and international races and the cars driven in these races. Readers interested in historical races and the cars (and drivers) that set records will pore over the photos and descriptions of cars from the early 1900s to the present, including rocket-propelled race cars that can break the sound barrier. Can any children’s library have too many race-car books? Unlikely, so get the engines revving. Grades 3-5. --J. B. Petty
