Darnell Baynes, Louisiana farmer and horse breeder, and his sons flee the state after killing men who were trying to conscript the boys into the Confederate army. Their subsequent wanderings, as seen through the eyes of the youngest, Ward, end in Montana with their rescue of a miner and his nubile daughter, Kit, from bushwhackers. Ward makes big plans for himself and Kit, hinging on a horserace and overcoming the machinations of various evildoers. The main characters' repartee, some of which falls flat, takes up much of the book. This is not on the same level as Western (and detective) writer Bill Pronzini's work, but few of today's Westerns are. It's standard fare; recommended only for public libraries with a heavy demand for the genre.
