Henderson describes how the lakes were formed billions of years ago and presents historical information regarding early explorers and Indian tribes of the region. She includes a brief discussion of the kinds of ships that once sailed and those currently sailing the area, along with a description of the canals and locks built to connect the lakes. The final chapter touches on the ecological problems facing the area due to natural and industrial pollution.
