Grade 3-4 Good intentions can't redeem these two attempts at bibliotherapy. Every Kid ' s Guide to Decision Making is the better of the two, mainly because it is more focussed. It hardly seems appropriate, however, to show one child calling another ``you jerk'' because of a ``stupid decision'' when children have been told prior to this to avoid doing anything that might hurt another person physically or mentally. Every Kid ' s Guide to Watching TV Intelligently begins by discussing the negative aspects of TVhardly the best way to win a child's attention. Although the book offers some good points about the harmful aspects of commercials, some of the many blanket statements are too simplistic and many are unrealistic. Maintaining that a child should watch only TV shows in which crime never wins over law and order hardly seems the best way to help a child cope with the realities of our world. The text is littered with professional jargon, and few children will care if TV can ``stimulate interesting conversations'' or if it shows ``crime and violence in proper perspective.'' In both books, the cartoon illustrations are colorful, but they are cluttered with ballooned remarks that often do more to overwhelm the text than to clarify it.
