Grade 1-2 Children just learning to read deserve better than Where's That Duck? This story of four ducks escaping from their farmyard, a mule's search for them and a hungry fox, is written on a very simple reading level with lots of repetition of words and sounds. Books this easy are always in demand, but, unfortunately, Where's That Duck? is characterized by forced verse (the words rhyme, but the rhythm isn't there) and contrived phrasing. The text lacks the natural flow of the best books of this type (comparison with Dr. Seuss seems inevitable). The color illustrations have too much brown (which looks muddy rather than earthy), and there's a vagueness and lack of clarity to them. Some of the figures seem to run into each other in a strange (seemingly non-deliberate) way; the sense of depth and movement isn't there. This book will not motivate children to improve their reading skills. Lauralyn Persson, Pawtucket Public Library, R.I.
