A biography of Edmund Hillary, whose love of snow, mountains, and the outdoor life, culminated in his conquering the highest peak in the world

Grade 5-9-- A straightforward biography of the rangy New Zealander who, with the Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, was the first climber to summit Mount Everest in 1953. Opening with an account of that great success, Gaffney flashes back to summarize Hillary's youth, his introduction to climbing, and the expeditions in which Hillary participated. His love for the Sherpa people and his refusal to rest on his laurels give an important subtext to Hillary's life, perhaps explaining how he continued after the tragic loss of his wife and daughter in a plane crash while he was building a hospital in a remote mountain village. The text is good, providing a clear, fact-filled, and accurate account without sensationalizing the deaths and injuries that are inherent to climbing in the Himalayas. Forty black-and-white photos amply illustrate historical events related by the text. Nine colorful double-page spreads open each chapter, and forty-five other color shots enhance the text. Four pages of appendixes provide additional photos; there is only one small map of the Himalayan region. The bibliography includes 11 mostly adult titles by Hillary and/or his wife and 3 other titles, most of which are out of print. --Joel Shoemaker, Tilford Middle School, Vinton, IA
