ea. vol: (Cornerstones of Freedom Series). CIP. Childrens. 1986. PLB $6.95. Grade 3-6 Of these titles, only . . . the Montgomery Bus Boycott will be a valued addition to children's collections. In clear prose, accessible to those with no prior knowledge of the situation, Stein describes the conditions that inspired the boycott, Rosa Parks' heroism, and the emerging leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr. The remaining three volumes offer only short, superficial treatments of topics that are already covered in most collections. . . . the Election of Abraham Lincoln is narrow in focus, and does not adequately detail the nature of slaverythe principal issue in the campaign. . . . the Black Hawk War is poorly written, with awkward passages and a weak ending. Far better is Margaret Cunningham's Black Hawk (Dillon, 1979; o.p.), which includes valuable information about Black Hawk's early life and the culture of his people, as well as a memorable description of the sad humiliation he faced in his later years. . . . the United Nations offers a brief, lively account of the organization's development and its achievements as an international forum, and as a force in improving world health and welfare, but the brevity of the volume will limit its usefulness in most libraries. UNESCO is described without any mention of the controversy occasioned by its ``New World Information Order;'' nor is the withdrawal of the United States from that body noted. Each volume is illustrated with unmemorable two-color drawings. Rita Auerbach, Stratford Ave. School, Garden City, N.Y.
