Reviews

ea. vol: diags. illus. photogs. (Tech Talk Bks.). CIP. Childrens. June 1985. PLB $8.95. Grade 4-8 These dictionary-arranged volumes are crammed with information, although the format may appeal more to younger children than the text would indicate. Profuse cross-references help make relationships clear. In Nuclear Tech Talk, the authors are so neutral in their treatment of such items as "detonator," "fireball" and "nuclear device" that it is almost chilling. The illustrations are in both color and black and white and include photographs and diagrams. The clarity and quality are uneven. Often, photographs of models are used instead of photos of the actual ship or plane. Charles Coble's Nuclear Energy (Raintree, 1983), which deals with these areas in a narrative fashion, explores the dangers and the ramifications. Robot Tech Talk is on target. So many students are eager for information on robots that even younger readers will be motivated to read beyond their level. Color and black-and-white photographs show old, current and experimental robots and components as the text describes them and their technology. Some amusing cartoons are included for leavening. There are at least a dozen other robot books, but the concise format of this one is a plus. Sylvia S. Marantz, Wellington School, Columbus, Ohio
