Paul P Sipiera is the author of several nonfiction books for children.
Gr. 2^-4. An exciting new chapter in space exploration began with the launch of the first space station in 1971. This easy-to-read book serves as a good introduction to the world's use of space stations, examining the successes and failures of the first groundbreaking ones in the early '70s, the important accomplishments of the present-day Mir station, and plans for the future International Space Station. The authors begin with two relatively light chapters, which provide relevant background and make the technical subject more accessible. Lots of color photos and large, easy-to-read type add to the book's appeal for the younger reader. This is not, however, comprehensive enough for in-depth reports. The bibliography, which includes books, organizations, and online sites, will be helpful to children looking for other sources. Lauren Peterson
