Reviews

Reviewed with Rosanna Hansen's Caring Animals.

Gr. 2-4. Amazing animal stories make up these two titles in the True Tales series. Caring Animals focuses on animals that help humans with disabilities. Each chapter introduces a different animal, including Cuddles, the seeing-eye horse, as well as dolphins that assist people who suffer from conditions ranging from Tourette's syndrome to paralysis. Talented Animals spotlights Twiggy the waterskiing squirrel, Tracker the movie-star dog, elephants who make art and play music, and other singular creatures. Both titles introduce their subjects in simple, enthusiastic language that, while occasionally chirpy, is on-target for newer readers, and each title closes with a glossary and list of further resources. Good choices for nonfiction book reports, these will engage elementary students with their exciting subjects and mostly sharp, color images of the animals showing off their unexpected talents.
