Reviewed with Donna Townsend's How Long Is It?
Gr. 1-2. Small books, big color photographs, and a few words introduce measurement and fractions in these titles in the Rookie Read-About Math Series. How Long Is It? traces feet, and rulers, and the possibilities of describing how one thing is bigger than another. Apple Fractions divides apples into parts, and names those parts as fractions, but then complicates the issue with a plate of apple muffins. Each muffin is described as a fraction of the whole plate of muffins, which might be a bit confusing. Loreen Leedy's Measuring Penny (1998) and Stuart Murphy's MathStart books, which tell stories while imparting math concepts, are more fun but aimed at slightly older children. GraceAnne DeCandido
