Grade 3-7?Lavish, full-color contemporary photographs, accompanied by some historical photos and reproductions of paintings and etchings, capture the essence of Tokyo and London. The texts describe the histories of these two great cities, characteristics of major neighborhoods, significant points of interest, parks, and leisure activities?especially theater, sports, and, in Tokyo, the traditional festivals associated with Shinto and Buddhism. Each slender volume concludes with brief descriptions of famous landmarks, some of which are pictured; a "fast facts" and chronology section; and an adequate map and glossary. Although the texts are occasionally choppy and the layouts sometimes awkward, particularly in Tokyo, these books are good introductions for young travelers and report writers, who may find similar material in encyclopedias to be less accessible. There is, however, much overlap at a similar level with James E. Davis and Sharryl D.
