About the Author

P Stephen Hardy is the author of several nonfiction books for children.

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up—This refreshing book looks at the achievements of seldom-mentioned leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, filling a gap in the literature of the period. In addition to biographical sketches of 61 key individuals and organizations of the era, most of which are accompanied by a black-and-white photograph, the text provides an overview of the events leading up to the movement. The profiles begin with Asa Philip Randolph and end with Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon. The book also looks at the Greensboro Four, the Freedom Riders, and those who were killed in the often-forgotten Orangeburg massacre. In short, this title recounts countless acts of raw courage and heroism from ordinary people who did extraordinary things, risking their own lives. This is a time that must be remembered, and these are people who deserve to be celebrated. This book does just those things.—Carol Jones Collins, Columbia High School, Maplewood, NJ
