K-Gr 1 Simple stories for beginning readers, both of which show minorities in positive situations and depict children of various ethnic backgrounds playing and learning together. The illustrations are bright and expressive, and the texts, although simple, depict true-to-life situ ations relevant to children's experi ences. Katie Can addresses the prob lems that a young child faces when others can do things that she can't. This dilemma is resolved humorously. I Am shows a child in contrast to others in his environment while reinforcing concepts such as big-small, tall-short, black- white, etc. Both books are good addi tions to primer and pre-primer collec tions.
