Describes the life of the civil rights worker who is honored on Martin Luther King Day

K-Gr 2-- When their black classmates Daniel and Janet mention that they are going to march in a parade to honor Martin Luther King, Ben and Amy want to find out more about this famous person. Daniel explains who King was and why a day is set aside to honor him. The information Daniel presents is general and gives readers a basic (if somewhat spotty) overview of the subject and the racial climate at the time. It is apparent from the outset that Ben and Amy know little about King, but after Daniel's explanation, they are enthusiastic about participating in the parade. At times Daniel sounds more like a teacher than student. The illustrations are a combination of black-and-white and full-color photographs and watercolors. The arrangement is somewhat distracting, but often the photos do enhance the text. Two better choices for explaining the concept behind the King holiday are Martin Luther King Day (Carolrhoda, 1987) by Linda Lowery and Our Martin Luther King Book (Child's World, 1986) by Patricia McKissack. --Jeanette Lambert, LaVega School, Waco, TX
