Grade 2-4--These two biographies explore the lives of their subjects in a straightforward manner. The book about Columbus portrays the famous seaman as a determined individual in spite of the skepticism and obstacles he faced. Greene also describes how his determination and greed drove Columbus to commit some inhumane deeds in dealing with his crew and the inhabitants of the various islands he discovered. The biography of King includes more information on his family background and childhood experiences. The focus is on King's accomplishments and his role in affecting change. The many illustrations, while useful, are at times overwhelming. For example, readers are asked to distinguish between two pictures of Columbus saying goodbye to Queen Isabella. The differences are subtle and require a somewhat critical eye. Both books provide basic information and realistic portrayals of these two men.
