ea. vol: illus. by Arnold Lobel. unpaged. Harper. 1986. PS $4.95. PreS Ziefert encourages children to guess what a lovably dumpy bear will wear, purchase in different stores, and need for different activities in this quartet of guessing game books. The format in each book is the same. Three or four objects are pictured on a page. Children are asked to choose the appropriate object that bear will need, based on the weather or the activity. The opposite page folds out to reveal bear and the correct choice in a gloriously colorful scene. Lobel's exuberant watercolor illustrations are rich yet sprightly and give life to the books' guessing game format. The text in the books is repetitious, and both Bear Gets Dressed and Bear All Year have flat endings. Although the text doesn't live up to the illustrations, the pictures and extremely simple concepts in these books will be easily understood by young listeners. These playful books are good choices for preschool storytime and to put into the hands of young children who love the challenge of a guessing game.Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, Wis.
