The lack of an index, list of sources, and suggestions for further reading make this strictly a coffee table book. A compendium of the various weapons used by the combatants in World War II, it contains no explanation of why the authors consider them "great," and the selection is quixotic. The Spitfire and the Essex class aircraft carriers were crucial weapons, but so was radar, which is not mentioned. Miniature submarines and the U.S. M4 tank are included, although they had little impact on the war. There are errors, too; e.g., the Nagasaki bomb is described as using uranium, not plutonium. Readers with no background in the subject might like this superficial volume, but most of its information can be better found in standard sources.
