Synopsis
Author of The Great Resorts of North America and managing editor of Holiday magazine, Mr. Hepburn has now written about some famous American historical houses, and he tells the story of the history, settlement, and development of the United States in terms of these houses. It is also a chronicle of the domestic lives of many who helped establish and extend the nation. The book describes ancient desert dwellings, houses of Spanish, English and Dutch settlers in the East and West, of patriots and colonial leaders, and some landmarks along the westward-marching frontier. A special chapter describes several fascinating dwellings where renowned artists, writers, and inventors lived and worked. Also mentioned are houses that reflect the nation's first era of affluence and are ornate monuments to great fortunes. The birthplaces of Presidents, the ancestral estates of three eminent American families, the houses where a war ended, and where a murdered President died are also included.
