With all of the thousands of characters that populate the Old Testament, it can be difficult to get a grasp on the deeds and relationships of them all. Donald Sommerville solves this problem by listing each of 300 main personages, Jew and gentile, in alphabetical order and providing incisive encapsulations of their lives that are gleaned from other historical sources in addition to the bible. Accompanying this well-organized information, the book is worth owning simply for the captivating illustrations, which run the gamut of styles and media from Donatello to Edvard Munch, from medieval woodcut to Renaissance statuary to Flemish tapestry -- not your average cherubim and seraphim.
