The Tres Riches Heures du duc de Berry is, many believe the most beautiful of the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages; it is certainly the most famous. John, duke of Berry was related to several French Kings. He was known for his passion for collecting beautiful things of all sorts. Of his 150 manuscripts, about half are religious works, and fifteen of these were The Book of Hours. This was the name given to collections of prayers intended for lay persons who wished to turn their thoughts to God at certain set hours of the day. This book reproduces all the plates of the manuscript with numerous enlargements; finally the Book of Hours is described, analyzed, and narrated with a rare combination of scholarship and zest by Edmund Pognon, Chief Keeper at the National Library in Paris, and an expert on all things medieval. Hardcover-illustrated, 123pp.
