This book begins with the basics on jewellry makingā€”how to organize your workshop, what tools and equipment you will need, and the different types of metals with which you will be working. There is a comprehensive chapter on the basic techniques of metal working, and then the author describes how to make specific items. He also discusses the mass production of "goldware" ringsā€”wedding and signets, the making and decorating of shanks and shoulders, and the ornamenting of large bezels. There are chapters on brooches, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets which detail additional techniques such as safety hinge and pin making, earrings, clips and screws, and frames for double-clip brooches. Finally, the book describes the allied techniques of polishing, setting, and finishing which bring the mount to its final appearance.

Despite the growing popularity of jewellery-making as a leisure craft in the last few years, there has not been, up to now, a book to describe the advanced techniques used by the professional for the kind of jewellery sold in jewellers' shops. This book, written by an expert of many years' standing, aims to repair this omission.
Charles A. Jarvis was apprenticed to the Birmingham firm of Payton Pepper & Sons when he left school. Some years later he joined the Metropolitan Police force, in which he served about 10 years. At the outbreak of war he joined the RAF and became a pilot; he was invalided out of the servies in 1945 and returned to his original career. He joined Bostock & Rainer of Hatton Garden, London, as a member of their workshop and rose rapidly to become foreman. In 1961 he was made managing director of Bostock & Rainer's new company in Haverhill, Suffolk, which original traded as Fine Metals & Centrifugal Castings Ltd, but later changed its name to Bostock & Rainer (Haverhill) Ltd.
