Grade 6 Up-- Greenfield has updated his acclaimed volume on book publishing to bring it into the electronic age. This edition incorporates the new technology that has changed the industry since the original edition was published in 1976. Along with the descriptions of traditional methods that have not changed, this revision introduces authors writing at word processors; editors receiving floppy disks; and illustrators using computer graphics programs. The major changes involve the modern methods of composition and printing, plus an all-new chapter on desktop publishing. Throughout, Greenfield's descriptions reflect the current state of publishing: his chapter on copy editing, for instance, has been changed since most publishing houses now rely on free-lance help. One omission in the chapter on bindings, as in the first edition, is any reference to library or reinforced bindings. The glossary and bibliography (almost all new) are still excellent, although the index, as in the first edition, has some gaps. The design of the book has been refined, and many of the illustrations have been replaced to better support the text. Books: From Writer to Reader is clear, complete, and authoritative; it remains the best source on a changing industry for young adults. --David Gale, "School Library Journal"
