An illustrated collection of traditional nursery rhymes

PreS It seems to be a sort of rite of passage for illustrators to do a Mother Goose book. With more than a full column of them listed in Books in Print, is there really need for another? The answer is that there is always room for an exuberant and respectful edition of a classic. Voake's collection is one. Her pen-and-ink illustrations, some with delicate watercolor washes, bring out the joy in the language of the rhymes, as do Raymond Briggs' illlustrations for The Mother Goose Treasury (Coward, 1966). The rhymes are loosly grouped together by theme when possible"Mary Had a Little Lamb" follows "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep," for examplewhich is nice for read-aloud continuity. Voake's double-page spreads of poems like "Jack and Jill" or "I Saw a Ship a Sailing" nearly dance off the page. The book, which contains most of the familiar rhymes, is beautifully laid out with clear lettering and a first-line index. Preschoolers should be indebted to Voake for creating a classy, classic edition of the mother of all children's poetry. Kathleen D. Whalin, New Canaan Library, Conn.
