Text: English, French (translation)
The riddle of Maxim Gorky (the pen name of Aleksei Peshkov, 1868-1936) has yet to be solved, but the Russo-French biographer Troyat covers the life of the Russian Jack London succinctly and with novelistic flair. He draws on Gorky's own remarkable childhood reminiscences to describe his brutalized early years among peasants and proletarians on the Volga ( gorky means "bitter" in Russian). Gorky's fiction and plays are a call for spiritual freedom and political revolution and a denunciation of bourgeois values. After years of exile, he cast his lot with Lenin in 1917 and worked to save the USSR's artists and intellectual heritage from destruction. Abroad from 1922 to 1928, he returned to spend his last years as a lionized tame spokesman for Stalin's regime. Troyat presents the known facts; perhaps glasnost will clear the record.
