Although the Library of Congress gives this book a social science classification, it is hard to decide whether it is a decorating book, a history of the Old West (meaning the territory west of the Mississippi, extending for Montana down to the Mexican border), a travelog, or a guide to cowboy antiques and memorabilia. Despite numerous vintage and contemporary photographs--which, incidentally, are superbly reproduced--this book is annoyingly superficial, a paean to a trendy but artificial "New West" lifestyle. On the plus side, you can find a state-by-state directory of stores, museums, artisans, and national parks and a list of rodeos, fairs, and festivals. Librarians may want to skip this title, but the authors' previous success with Santa Fe Style (Rizzoli, 1986) will probably make it a high-demand item.
