From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-An adventure set in the endangered African bush. One morning, Jamina goes with her grandfather to collect honey. "'I want to see elephants!'" she cries. "'You'll be lucky if you do...We don't see many now. Not since the hunters came.'" Soon the child, playing hunter, wanders off into the bush and gets lost. She discovers a "...tiny elephant, trying in vain to awaken his mother. The hunters had been there." She takes the frightened baby into her care, remembering her grandfather's advice to follow herds of animals if she is lost. After the suspense of a night spent under the stars and a near encounter with poachers, elephant and child are rescued. The simple text highlights the universality of the experience while breathtaking, realistic, full-color illustrations accent the panorama of the countryside and some of its ecological niches. Masterful composition invites readers into the landscape with detailed closeups of flora and fauna, while striking use of light and perspective add drama. People, too, are effectively rendered; Jamina's figure, rounded and childlike, is compelling in silhouette or full view. This title will appeal to fans of Verna Aardema's Oh, Kojo! How Could You! (1984) and What's So Funny, Ketu? (1989, both Dial), but is less folkloric and stylized and is more contemporary in tone. Brave Jamina is a heroine who will be welcome in story time, classroom, or just for pleasure.
