Reviews

Sewing is becoming a lost art, according to Thompson, whose book, in the Potter Needlework Library series, attempts to serve as a substitute for the once ubiquitous sewing teacher. Chapters on fabric selection and equipment and patterns set the stage for projects designed to teach a few basic machine-and hand-sewing skills, such as making buttonholes, hemming, seaming, cording, gathering, making linings, and setting zippers. Thompson sometimes assumes a familiarity with terms and equipment that beginners won't have, and several of the projects (such as a chair cover that must be altered extensively) require patience and practice. But diagrams are usually clear, and the selection of projects (and the wonderful color photographs of them) are more inviting than what's usually found in beginners' manuals. A few personal articles are included in the project roundup, but most items are attractive accessories for home decoration. A glossary would have been helpful. Stephanie Zvirin
