Old, Alone, and Neglected: Care of the Aged in Scotland and the United States (Comparative Studies of Health Systems & Medical Care) - Hardcover
Roughly one million elderly Americans live in institutions at any given time, but the nursing homes that house the majority provide care that is often substandard and impersonal, sometimes even inhumane. Most Scottish facilities for the aged are, by contrast, pleasant places to stay. This book compares one such institution in Scotland with one in the United States. Through intensive interviews with the elderly, Kayser-Jones sought to understand how it feels to be old, disabled, and institutionalized and what contributes to high or low quality care - from the perspective of those receiving it. In Scotland the aged have some choice, freedom, and independence. They are provided with meaningful social and work experiences, and are cared for with dignity and respect. Not so in the United States. There the staff described in this study shows little concern for their patients' dignity and individual rights, and the elderly are frequently infantilized, depersonalized, dehumanized, and indeed sometimes victimized. Americans are living longer these days, and the demand for nursing homes is steadily increasing. Systematic abuses of the elderly, such as those portrayed by Kayser-Jones must be stopped; her book takes a first step.
