Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Text in English. 116 pp. A fine copy with no markings. Light rubbing on the dust jacket. In her study of the French revolutionary theater Marie-Hélène Huet proposes a new and provocative interpretation of the Stage. While previous essays have stressed the ideological content of revolutionary drama, Huet explores the basic structures of the theater (stage-audience, actor-spectator) as aesthetic and political divisions. She finds a symmetrical organization at work in both the trial and execution of King Louis XVI and in the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as it was reenacted in the theaters of the time. The tribunal and the stage, Huet argues, define and circumscribe a network where the power of the written Law both sustains and undermines the power of the spoken word, Her essay offers a theory of the theater that extends beyond the French Revolution to integrate and comment upon recent critical writings on representation.
